They met in the opening match of the tournament and played a very entertaining match. When the teams played against each other for the 13th place, it was once again a goal-packed game between Australia and Russia, which the Russians won with 4-11 (2-4, 2-4, 0-3).
Mitchell George, goalkeeper in the Australian team, played well against Japan. It was tougher against Russia. He let in four balls in the first period, which ended 2-4 for the Russians.
In the second period Australia changed goalkeepers to Vladimir Plocek. However his start was equally tough. Russia scored two goals in just under one minute and took the lead to 2-6. Australia immedately scored two goals and was back in the game. But the Russians, with Alexander Taldonov in the lead, pushed ahead once again and ended the period with a four to eight lead.
Australia never came back after this and Russia further increased their lead in the third period. The end result was 4-11 and Russia got their revenge from the loss in the opening match.
