Sergei Iuryev is the name of the first scorer of this Championship. The Russian forward scored the first goal in the entertaining first match in Lisebergshallen. Australia had the final say since the match ended 11-9 (5-4, 4-2, 2-3) in favour of the green-yellow team.
The first match of the World Floorball Championship in Gothenburg offered much, and more. Many goals, close saves, a hat trick, a Zorro goal and an astonishing own goal. Russia took the lead after only a couple of minutes when Sergei Iuryev found himself alone in front of Australia’s goal net and could score the first goal of the WFC2014.
Australia, with a larger crowd cheering them on, took over the game after that. Two fast goals by each of the teams later, Timothy Boteler stole the show and had time to score a hat trick before the end of the first period, which ended 5-4.
The second period started the same way the first one had ended and with a goal keeper on fire and a team with better shots, Australia could finish the second period with a four goal lead (9-5). One of the goals was an own goal where Russia’s Dmitry Uglanov completely unchecked passed to Russian keeper and into the goal.
Russia started off the third period strong, but with the Australian keeper, Vladimir Plocek, on fire and a missed penalty shot in the last minutes of the game Russia never got close to winning.
